Background
The Dinka Macrolanguage or Thu ɔ ŋjäŋ ( Jaang ) is classified as part of the Dinka- Nuer subfamily, which is part of Western Nilotic, which in turn is part of Eastern Sudanic, and the Nilo-Saharan subfamily. Its various subdivisions are spoken by the Dinka (More than two million people), one of the largest ethnic groups in Southern Sudan . The language most closely related is Nuer , the language of one of the Dinka people's traditional neighbours in South Sudan . Other major languages closely related within Western Nilotic are Shilluk , Luo/Dholuo and Acholi. The Dinka Macrolanguage exists in five major language divisions: (i ) Dinka, Northeastern or Padang; (ii ) Dinka Northwestern or Ruweng; (iii) Dinka South Central or Agar; (iv) Dinka Southeastern or Bor ; and (v ) Dinka Southwestern or Rek. The dialects of the Dinka Padang language include: Abiliang (Dinka Ibrahim, Akoon, Bawom, Bowom), Dongjol, Luac (Luaic), Ngok-Sobat (Ngork, Jok), Ageer (Ager, Ageir, Abuya, Beer, Niel, Nyel, Paloc, Paloic), Rut, Thoi. The total population includes: Abialang (7,200), Dongjol (9,000), Luac (2,500), Ngok-Sobat (16,000), Jok (20,000), Ageer (13,500), Rut (2,000), Thoi (400). The lexical similarity of the Dinka Padang with other Dinka languages is the following: 92% with Northwestern Dinka , 88% with Southwestern Dinka , 88% with Southeastern Dinka , 86% with South Central Dinka. The Dinka people in Sudan use the Dinka alphabet, which is based in the Latin alphabet with some additional letters.
